We could get some rain overnight and into Tuesday morning, with amounts of 10-20 millimetres by late in the day. The high Tuesday is 7 C. The rain continues Wednesday, with a high of 5 C, while Thursday and Friday are projected to have highs of 2 C under partly sunny skies.

Shooting suspect nabbed: A man believed to have shot three people inside a home on Hazel Dell Avenue in East Kildonan was arrested early this morning, city police have confirmed. Haben Nipsey Weldekidan, 22, of Winnipeg, will likely face three counts of attempted murder in connection to the shooting, which happened early Sunday morning. Limits on caribou hunting: Manitoba conservation are hoping to reach an agreement with Dene hunters in northern Manitoba on limits on caribou hunting. This year, for the first time in recorded memory, caribou from the vast Qamanirjuaq herd came together in one place, at Tadoule Lake, drawing hunters from across the north. The hunt has harvested thousands of animals and distressed local Dene who fear the herd won’t survive the pressure of hunting, climate change and industrial development. READ MORE
Charleswood home destroyed: A family in Charleswood lost their home and a family pet to a fire on Sunday afternoon. The fire on Matlock Crescent destroyed the house, but a family of five wasn’t home at the time of the blaze. A city firefighter donned a respirator, went inside the burning home and rescued a Springer spaniel. But a cat did not survive the fire. READ MORE

Cuts to education: How far the Winnipeg School Division will go to cut expenses will become clear tonight when the board votes on its final budget. So far, they’re proposing to drop two of the four unidentified schools scheduled to get full-day kindergarten in September, have ditched plans to hire a male aboriginal elder, deferred some programs until the fall of 2017 and are asking parents who can afford it to pay 25 cents a day — or $5 a month — for their child’s milk at school lunches.
Symington slowdown for six weeks: Drivers using the Symington overpass could be surprised by traffic backups this morning. For approximately six weeks, the overpass on Fermor Avenue (Hwy. 1 East) between Lagimodiere Boulevard and the east Perimeter Highway, will be restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction.

Despite the province’s policy of not recognizing the program, the Free Press has uncovered evidence that taxpayers are on the hook for millions of dollars every year to fund full-day kindergartens. Koe quarter wins Canada: Kevin Koe skipped his Alberta team to a 9-5 triumph over Brad Gushue’s foursome from Newfoundland/Labrador in the final of the Brier — the Canadian men’s curling championship — in Ottawa on Sunday night. Koe won the Brier in 2010 and 2014, but this is his first title with current teammates Marc Kennedy, Brent Laing and Ben Hebert. The team will represent Canada at the world championship next month in Switzerland. Manitoba’s Mike McEwen lost the bronze-medal game in Ottawa to Northern Ontario on Sunday afternoon. READ MORE

A group of towns in southwestern Manitoba and southern Saskatchewan would be getting television reception, as broadcasts from the North Dakota Broadcasting company were to begin on an interim basis.
