R.I.P. Harvey Smith: The longtime city councillor, who represented the Sargent Park ward from 1980 to 1986 and the Daniel McIntyre ward from 1998 until 2014, has died at the age of 80. Smith was known for returning calls from constituents, but could rub some of his fellow councillors the wrong way, such as in 2013 when he posted a set of fake street signs in his ward’s worst back lanes with the name of then mayor Sam Katz and members of the executive policy committee to draw attention to the poor condition of the laneways. Not empty-handed: Less than 24 hours after the most crippling loss of their careers, Mike McEwen and his teammates from Winnipeg’s Fort Rouge Curling Club rallied to defeat Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario 7-5 in an extra end Sunday afternoon at the Canadian men’s curling championship, taking the bronze medal. McEwen says the earlier loss still smarts, but the team is looking ahead. “There’s been some bad Manitoba (losses) but that one was bad… even worse. Crazy stuff happens in life and you just have to move on. As a team, we’ve recovered from some pretty awful things, and (Sunday) was the first step of our recovery. I think we’ll be OK.” READ MORE
