A blessing for Dakota: We begin the week with a terrific story, told by Free Press reporter Alexandra Paul, about the sacred white buffalo of Sioux Valley Dakota Oyate that gave birth to a white calf earlier this month. People in the community of 1,000 residents south of Brandon see the arrival of the calf as a blessing. “To have another white buffalo calf that’s born is more of a signal to us that no only is our culture and people surviving, but thriving,” said Sioux Valley Chief Vince Tacan. Your forecast: Certainly, Environment Canada has a whack of cutting-edge, scientific tools at its disposal to forecast the weather. But for our purposes, let’s dumb it down a bit and hope like crazy what the weather pros are seeing in their “crystal ball” does, in fact, come to pass. The seven-day weather forecast for Winnipeg and area is nothing short of spectacular, with sunshine and plenty of heat right through the May long weekend. Expect daytime highs of 18 C to 25 C today through Thursday, while Friday’s high is 20 C, and Saturday and Sunday are 28 C and 29 C, respectively. Much the same conditions are expected for cottage country, including Winnipeg Beach, the Whiteshell and around Lac du Bonnet.

Heading home: Most property owners displaced by the Caddy Lake wildfire will be able to go home Tuesday morning as of 8 a.m. Provincial fire officials made the announcement Sunday afternoon as 65 per cent of the fire is now under control. Fire crews are said to be making good progress on battling the blaze. Further north, in Nopiming Provincial Park, the fire at Beresford Lake is considered 60 per cent contained. READ MORE
Blockade no more: Members of Fox Lake Cree Nation and representatives from Manitoba Hydro came to an agreement Sunday to end the blockade that began last Thursday following the desecration of ceremonial land, according to Cree leaders. Among the concessions agreed up will be quarterly meetings between Cree leaders and Hydro executives. READ MORE

Boom! Boom! Boom: When you hear gunfire today, relax. It’s part of the pomp for the opening of the first session of the 41st Manitoba legislature. Lt.-Gov. Janice C. Filmon will leave Government House at 1 p.m. and be greeted by a 15-gun artillery salute and inspect a 100-person Guart of Honour while the Royal Canadian Air Force Band plays. She will read the speech from the throne at 1:30 p.m. and then the new Tory government will take over, outlining its plans for the coming year.
Death to caterpillars: Coming soon to trees near you, the city is spraying for forest tent caterpillars. The program started Sunday at 9:30 p.m. and will continue this week. The first areas will be Garden City, Margaret Park, Templeton, Amber Trails, Leila North, Riverbend, Rivergrove, Old Kildonan and West Kildonan. Bullet injuries: When a couple of people show up at the hospital with gunshot wounds, it’s likely time to call the police. That’s what alert hospital staff did early Sunday morning when a man and woman stopped by a city ER looking for treatment. The two were in a vehicle when they the bullets started flying near Magnus Avenue and Aikins Street. They are listed in stable condition with serious injuries. Bautisa: The Texas Rangers finally got back at Toronto Blue Jays’ slugger Jose Bautista for his memorable bat flip after a crucial home run in Game 5 of last year’s America League Division Series. The bad blood spilled over Sunday when Bautista, hit by a pitch minutes earlier, slid dangerously into second base and took out Rougnes Odor. The Rangers infielder took exception, pushed Bautista and then landed a right hand to Bautista’s face, prompting players from both benches to spill out.
C-section: In Toronto, a pregnant woman inside a vehicle was shot and killed by someone in another vehicle, and her baby was delivered by emergency caesarean section in hospital. The shooting happened in the neighbourhood of Rexdale. The woman was about 34 years old and five months pregnant.

On May 16, 1930: The Manitoba Free Press reported that in Great Britain, former First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill attacked the new naval treaty. In Winnipeg, the proprietor of the Bon-Bon Shop, George De Lasala, was held up by three people in the vicinity of his home on Balmoral Street, forced into an automobile, and driven to the outskirts of the city near Logan Avenue where he was beaten and robbed. The victim managed to find a streetcar and reached the police station by 1:45 a.m., where he reported the crime.
