Good morning!

Your forecast: If you stayed inside Sunday instead of soaking up the sun and warmth, you chose poorly. Very likely, it was your last opportunity to appreciate late autumn at its finest, as the coming week could signal the start of winter. Today, expect clouds and periods of rain, with wind from the southeast at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h and a high of 9 C. The rain continues Tuesday and the daytime high is 6 C, while showers could turn to flurries Wednesday as the mercury hits 3 C but falls to -4 C overnight. Forecasters are calling for snow Thursday and a high of 0 C, while the daytime temperatures Friday and Saturday are -4 C and -5 C, respectively.

France strikes back: France launched “massive” air strikes on the Islamic State group’s de facto capital in Syria on Sunday night, destroying a jihadi training camp and a munitions dump in the city of Raqqa, where Iraqi intelligence officials say the attacks on Paris were planned. Twelve aircraft including 10 fighter jets dropped a total of 20 bombs. Meanwhile, police announced seven arrests and hunted for more members of the sleeper cell that carried out the Paris attacks that killed 129 people. READ MORE

Trudeau’s star power: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s arrival in Turkey over the weekend was one of the main attractions at the G20 summit. Canada’s new leader was mobbed for “selfies” by dozens of delegates at the meeting, even before he delivered a speech to world leaders that included a reaffirmation that Canada will accept 25,000 Syrian asylum seekers, a discussion on Canada’s commitment to spend heavily on infrastructure to stimulate growth and a pledge for the country to be a leader on climate change. Riding the rails: Premier Greg Selinger has his eye on relocating rail lines withing Winnipeg, including the huge CPR yards. Today’s throne speech will contain a commitment to striking a special committee of government and private-sector representatives — including officials from CN and CP — that will begin the arduous task of negotiating a deal to remove most of the railway assets that criss-cross the city now. The sources said that group could be unveiled as early as next month. READ MORE

WE Day hits city: Several prominent celebrities, activists and humanitarians take to the stage to share their stories with about 16,000 Manitoba students and educators at the MTS Centre today as part of WE Day. Held in cities across the country annually by charity/youth-empowerment organization Free the Children, We Day aims to motivate young people into taking action in their communities by showing them how they can make a difference in their world. Today’s lineup includes former actor, director and author Henry Winkler, Academy Award winning actress and social activist Marlee Matlin, Rinelle Harper, the Garden Hill high school student appearing almost exactly a year after she was assaulted and left for dead in the Assiniboine River, and musician/philanthropist Tom Jackson.

Busy WSD agenda: Controversial Winnipeg School Division trustee Mike Babinsky will be at his first regular board meeting at 7 p.m. since serving a suspension for allegedly harassing a senior employee. There’ll be oodles of motions and policies to be debated and voted upon: changing ward boundaries, conducting a survey of arts education in each division school, establishing a policy to ensure there is equity in the arts education available at each school, approving in principle the creation of an elite boys’ hockey academy at Kelvin High, and asking the province to build three new schools.

MMA mayhem: Ronda Rousey’s 12-fight unbeaten run was stopped when she was knocked out by a kick to her head by challenger Holly Holm 59 seconds into the second round at UFC 193 on Sunday. Holm (10-0), a former undisputed welterweight boxing champion, took the bantamweight title while Rousey left the stadium to receive treatment for a concussion and facial cuts at a nearby hospital. Rousey is a former judo Olympian. UFC chief Dana White said a rematch between Holm and Rousey in the future “makes a lot of sense.”

Slumping Jets battle Blues: After five straight defeats, including going 0-3 on their current road swing, the Winnipeg Jets will have a bit of a fresh look tonight when they take on the St. Louis Blues. Head coach Paul Maurice looks like he could insert defenceman Adam Pardy into the lineup, and he was mixing up his lines during practice Sunday. After a terrific start to the 2015-16 NHL season, the Jets are now 8-8-2 and have fallen out of the Top-8 in the Western Conference.

The arrest warrant for 26-year-old Salah Abdeslam — brother of bomber Brahim Abdeslam — describes him as very dangerous and warns people not to intervene if they see him. READ MORE

#SexyIn3Words: Can anyone be that succinct? Apparently so. The envy of headline writers everywhere for brevity, consider: “Kisses are amazing,” “Yes, I’m employed,” “Breakfast in bed,” or “I have Nutella.”

On Nov. 16, 1994: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that fewer than half of long-distance connections — by phone, fax or modem — in the province went through, lamenting that “the information superhighway” was beset by a second day of technical problems. The Prairie Theatre Exchange production of InQuest, by Bill Harrar, based on the 1988 shooting death of J.J. Harper, drew criticism from First Nations leaders and arts workers for not portraying a First Nations perspective. Aboriginal director Monica Marx said the matter should have been handled by an indigenous writer.
