On Oct. 17, 1987: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Canadian Armed Forces was making a $500,000 push to recruit women for 350 combat jobs, because most of the country’s female soldiers weren’t interested in applying for them. A poll showed Canadians wanted prime minister Brian Mulroney to call an election over the issue of free trade with the United States.
