Families of residents at a Winnipeg care home dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak were asked to monitor their loved ones Thursday night amid staffing problems. And incoming White House chief of staff Ron Klain said more Biden administration hires will be announced today.

Pandemic projections: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, will release new projections for the spread of COVID-19 this morning. As many as 60,000 new cases a day are expected by the end of 2020 if the spread can’t be contained. The news conference will take place outside Trudeau’s home, Rideau Cottage, where he gave briefings during the first wave of the pandemic this spring. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

Set for summit: Trudeau will meet virtually with his counterparts, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump, during an online Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation leaders’ summit. Biden’s birthday: U.S. president-elect Joe Biden turns 78 today. He will become the oldest president when he is sworn into office in January, surpassing Ronald Reagan, who was 77 years and 349 days old when he left office in 1989. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Staffing crunch at care home: More than half of Golden Links Lodge’s 81 residents have tested positive for COVID-19, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority announced late Thursday night. A two-person team from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was scheduled to be at the not-for-profit personal care home, which is struggling with staffing problems, throughout the night. Golden Links Lodge asked the families of residents to send one person to sit beside their loved one and monitor them. READ MORE

Ambassador meets with arrested men: Canada’s ambassador to China met virtually Thursday with Michael Kovrig, who has been detained in China for nearly two years, Global Affairs Canada announced. Dominic Barton also met with detained Canadian businessman Michael Spavor on Nov. 10, the news release states. Kovrig and Spavor have been held in China since late 2018, soon after Canada detained Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE
