Free Press Head Start for Nov. 23

Good morning!

The province has changed the way it reports its COVID-19 data, leaving out some of the detailed figures Manitobans may have come to expect.

The latest report includes more information on the increase of influenza cases and respiratory syncytial virus cases. So far, the Children’s Hospital is reporting three times its usual number of children’s flu cases, further straining the health system.

On the bright side

After suffering severe injuries in a snowmobile crash last year, Ethan Christie’s parents and siblings were allowed into his room at Health Sciences Centre to essentially say their goodbyes while he lay in a medically induced coma.

Thanks to two friends who were with Ethan the day of the crash, the intervention of emergency services and health-care workers and his sheer will to live, the 20-year-old defied his slim odds of survival. Chris Kitching reports.

While he’s eager to get back on his sled, Ethan Christie advises those who are riding on and off trails this winter to slow down, ride with others and wear a quality helmet. (Ruth Bonneville / Winnipeg Free Press)
