On Nov. 24, 1977: The Winnipeg Free Press reported premier Sterling Lyon proposed veteran Conservative Harry Graham as Speaker, surprising opposition MLAs. A man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for what the sentencing judge called “one of the most shocking sex crimes in Manitoba’s history.” A study from the University of Illinois found life in the suburbs “destructive” as the developments “isolate children from reality, prolong childhood and fail to provide the kind of emotional experiences necessary to prepare kids for adulthood.” And Margaret Trudeau talked to a New York tabloid about building a new life after her breakup with prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
