On this date

On Nov. 26, 1917: The Manitoba Free Press reported that French forces smashed through the German lines at Verdun, taking the first and second lines of defence and capturing 800 prisoners. Also in France, the British took the village of Bourlon and much of the surrounding woods. In Ontario, it was announced that farmers’ sons would not be conscripted for military service, and those already conscripted would be released from service, provided they returned to work on their farms.
