On Nov. 26, 1982: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that answering a phone call saved an office manager’s life; when Harry Speed of College Electric Ltd. went to answer the phone in a back office, he narrowly escaped a car that smashed into the business and knocked a fridge through his office wall. In Ottawa, the federal government agreed in principle to allowing the Northwest Territories to be divided, but ruled out granting provincial status to either the N.W.T. or the Yukon for the foreseeable future.
