Frustrated by “hopeless” working conditions and an increasing wage gap, a paramedic in rural Manitoba is warning many could quit if the province fails to resolve concerns. Rural paramedics want parity with their Winnipeg counterparts to help retain and recruit staff, the employee said, plus additional measures to address chronic understaffing fuelling burnout. Chris Kitching has the story.

On the bright side

There’s a new bartender at Elsie’s Hotel in Tolstoi: Ben Holodryga. Holodryga, the new owner-operator of the beloved hotel and beverage room, which closed in 2008 when its namesake, Elsie Kolodzinski, retired after 68 years on the job, says modestly, “I like this…. But I tell people, ‘I’m not a bartender, you’re not going to get your drink in two seconds.’” Nevertheless, customers are pouring in from across southern Manitoba and from the United States. The Carillon‘s Jordan Ross has the story.
