On Nov. 4, 1954: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the close races for the U.S. Senate were set to give the Democrats a one-seat majority but that recounts could change the balance of power. Atomic energy was touted as a potential economic boom for Manitoba, from mining raw materials to the production of nuclear power, the latter of which, it was revealed, was being given serious consideration by Manitoba Hydro for electricity production.
