Free Press Head Start for Nov. 4

Good morning.

Manitoba is cutting red tape in the teacher-certification process as schools struggle to cover staff absences and fill job openings. Maggie Macintosh has the story.

Conservative MP Dan Mazier says Parks Canada needs to be held accountable for the failed curtain at Clear Lake, and is pointing fingers at Steven Guilbeault, the federal environment minister, for the wrongdoing. The Brandon Sun‘s Michele McDougall reports.

Anmol Garg said machetes were no longer sold in his store on Selkirk Avenue as of two weeks ago in anticipation of new legislation, which is expected to be granted royal assent this week.

The Long-Bladed Weapon Control Act (Bill 39) — which won’t take effect until regulations are worked out — will require purchasers to be at least 18 years old and show identification that retailers have to record and retain for at least two years.

That would pose a problem for most of Garg’s customers. Carol Sanders has the story.

When Lorrie Pismenny’s doctor recommended she receive an ostomy, health-care professionals also suggested she check out the Ostomy Manitoba Association, a volunteer-based organization founded in 1972 that assists people facing life with gastrointestinal or urinary diversions.

So, Pismenny started attending the association’s monthly support group. Her main question for the group was, “What do I need to do to get on another boat or another plane?”

That was September 2000. Since then, the North Kildonan resident has resumed her travels — and become an instrumental part of the association. Aaron Epp has more here.

On this date

On Nov. 4, 1926: The Manitoba Free Press reported in Ishpeming, Mich., fifty-three miners trapped in the Barnes Hecker iron mine were believed dead after a flood of quicksand worked down from the surface to where the men were, 1,600 feet below. Democrats made gains in the U.S. House and Senate elections, as well as in governorships, threatening Republican control after president Calvin Coolidge’s landslide two years earlier.
