On Nov. 5, 1964: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Liberal prime minister Lester Pearson decried what he characterized as “talk and block and blackmail” tactics in Parliament from Conservative leader John Diefenbaker. Pearson vowed his government would move to get a new national flag adopted and complete other important business before Christmas. Relations between China and the Soviet Union appeared to be warming. In the U.S., Republican moderates sought to regain control of their party from senator Barry Goldwater and his lieutenants in the wake of his loss in the presidential election.
