On Nov. 7, 1951: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that portable classrooms would be in use in Winnipeg for the first time in the coming year, to alleviate overcrowding in the city’s schools. The keeper of one of Winnipeg’s most notorious betting houses, Irving “Fats” Wiener, was fined $200 and costs in a city police court. A city engineer warned that Winnipeg’s 65-year-old City Hall was not safe and that city councillors continuing to use the building did so at their own risk. Great Britain announced it would cut its spending abroad by $980,000,000 a year to halt a startling drain on it’s gold-dollar reserves. READ MORE
