A delay of 24 hours for medevac service for an ill newborn and his mother from Pimicikamak Cree Nation to Winnipeg has highlighted flaws in the health-care system, say First Nations leaders. Pimicikamak Chief David Monias likened the situation to calling 911 and waiting for an ambulance for more than a day. “We’ve got to start changing the system to make sure they’re able to respond in a manner that can save lives,” he says. On the bright side
Showing that slow and steady wins the race, extensive conservation efforts aimed at protecting gopher tortoises, as well recently discovered populations, mean Georgia’s state reptile now needs federal protection only in the small area where they were declared threatened 35 years ago.

On Oct. 11, 1921: The Manitoba Free Press reported British and Sinn Fein delegates held an important conference in London; the future of Ulster was seen as central to the problem of finding a solution for Ireland. Manitoba was the winner of the governor-general’s challenge shield competition, for the largest number of cadets in proportion to school attendance.
