COVID-19 crisis: The provincial government will release the latest COVID-19 numbers early this afternoon. The province announced 228 new cases — including 170 in Winnipeg — over the long weekend, and four new deaths, all in Winnipeg. One of the deaths announced Monday was of a man in his 40s — the youngest person known to have died of the coronavirus in Manitoba. Ben Waldman reports. READ MORE

New test site: A new drive-thru COVID-19 test site will open at 1066 Nairn Ave. this morning. The provincial government said last week the site will initially be able to perform up to 200 tests a day. READ MORE

Tuesday night football: Two undefeated NFL teams, the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans, are set to play only the second Tuesday game since 1946. The game was rescheduled after a COVID-19 outbreak among the Titans that earlier led to the postponement of a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers until later this season. READ MORE

Confirmation hearings continue: U.S. Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett will be questioned by Senate committee members on the second day of confirmation hearings. On Oct. 13, 1922: The Manitoba Free Press reported that in Toronto, for the first time since prohibition took force, there was a double bid for the anti-abolition vote in a southeastern Toronto byelection, with two of the four candidates decrying the current state of affairs. A cheque for the unusual amount of £50,000,000, “rare even in these days of high finance,” issued by Great Britain to the United States in payment of interest on war debt, was thought likely to be preserved as a historical relic after its purpose had been served.
