Sears’ slide continues: Sears, the former retail giant that started as a mail order catalogue more than 125 years ago, has filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. Sears Holdings, which runs Sears and Kmart stores, will shut down 142 locations near the end of 2018. On Oct. 15, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Allied 5th Army pushed across the Volturno River in south central Italy. German occupation troops were reportedly fleeing Crimea to avoid entrapment by Russian troops moving in swiftly from captured Zaporozhe. United States bombers attacked deep into Germany to hit a crucial ball-bearing plant in Schweinfurt; in the raid, the U.S. lost a record 60 bombers.
