Free Press Head Start for Oct. 19

Good morning!

As the civic election nears, one of the issues facing candidates is what to do about the city’s sprawling downtown. Melissa Martin has an in-depth feature on the challenges facing the area, and who should have a say in decisions affecting those who live and work there.

Malak Abas reports on a seven-candidate debate focusing on Indigenous enterprise.

And a former First Nations chief has signed on to assist mayoral candidate Don Woodstock deliver his latest campaign pledge, saying the candidate’s remarks on Indigenous men have been misunderstood.

Unrelated to election news: a serious vehicle collision on northbound St. Mary’s Road at Vivian Avenue has blocked traffic and Winnipeg police are advising motorists to take another route if heading downtown.
