Reservists on the Red: Naval reserve sailors were out on the Red River in small boats Sunday for training exercises to familiarize themselves with its currents and low underwater visibility. Commanding Lt.-Cmdr. Colin Stewart says the exercise was also about “letting the public know what we do.”

Las Vegas: At least 50 people are believed dead and over 200 people wounded after a gunman opened fire at an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas, Nev., making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. SWAT teams quickly descended on the concert and the casino where the shooter had taken position, and officers used explosives to get into the hotel room where the suspect was inside, authorities said. The gunman died at the scene and was identified by Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo as Stephen Paddock, 64. READ MORE

On Oct. 2, 1902: The Manitoba Free Press reported that following a visit by Sir Wilfrid Laurier to France, Canadian merchants would receive concessions on entry duties at French ports. U.S. vessels would be excluded from Canadian grain ports on the Great Lakes. A Canadian company, Robb Engineering of Amherst, was expanding into the United States despite tariffs.
