Canadian nets Nobel: Canadian scientist Donna Strickland has won a share of the Nobel Prize in physics. Strickland and Gerard Mourou of France helped develop laser pulses that have broad industrial and medical applications. Strickland is the third woman to win the physics prize — Marie Curie was the first, in 1903. READ MORE

On Oct. 2, 1962: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a swelling tide of U.S. federal troops with bayonets fixed and rifles ready enforced an uneasy truce at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss.; they were present to enforce the right of black student James H. Meredith, 29, to attend classes there as a forcibly enrolled student. The Mississippi governor was in court on a contempt claim because of his attempts to thwart Meredith’s entrance as the 114-year-old university’s first knowingly admitted black student. READ MORE
