Winnipeg police made arrests in a second assault at a Charleswood high school, while investigating an attack against a different student who is a newcomer from Ukraine.

The 14-year-old newcomer’s mother said a group of girls was allegedly responsible for both assaults, which occurred a day apart in the same washroom at Oak Park High School. Chris Kitching reports.

On the bright side

A free, virtual quilt at healingquilt.ca allows families to create a memorial for their lost loved ones as part of a national project that weaves together tributes and stories.

Elder Albert McLeod, an Indigenous knowledge carrier and community leader who has served as an adviser to Canadian Virtual Hospice, came up with the concept during the COVID-19 pandemic. He and volunteer powerhouse Shahina Siddiqui, a member of the advisory committee for the project, are bringing grief out of the shadows.

“It was definitely for me therapeutic — as I think it was for all the others as well on the committee — because we all had experience in this field in some ways, whether directly or indirectly,” Siddiqui says.

On Oct. 20, 1924: The Manitoba Free Press reported farmhand Adolf Stark of Steinbach was in a Brandon hospital after a near-fatal assault by three men; police had arrested two suspects before a third man named James Fraser walked into the police station to give himself up.
