On Oct. 20, 1942: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that dispatches from Stalingrad indicated deteriorating weather conditions were sharply restricting Nazi operations, and that the city’s fate could hinge on the ability of the Red Army to keep supplies and reinforcements moving across the icy Volga River. Italian troops ordered into Russia were reportedly mutinying. In Winnipeg, the Third Victory Loan drive had brought in $5,650,150.
