On Oct. 21, 1952: The Winnipeg Free Press reported a record crowd of nearly 4,000 packed the civic auditorium for a town hall where 18 candidates for city aldermen and three mayoral candidates presented their platforms. Alderman Jacob Penner answered in the affirmative when asked whether he was a communist, a response that drew boos from the audience. The Free Press honoured the 147th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar by flying the cross of St. George on Trafalgar Day, celebrated throughout the British Empire.
