On Oct. 22, 1962: The Winnipeg Free Press reported China was using tanks to advance on the western end of the Indian border and launched a new attack on eastern India. In Winnipeg, prime minister John Diefenbaker disclosed that his government planned to present new proposals to “meet the modern challenge of automation.” In Washington, U.S. president John F. Kennedy met with top congressional leaders; speculation persisted Kennedy was planning a drastic move in the escalating situation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union near Cuba.
