On Oct. 24, 1940: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was seeking the collaboration of the Vichy regime in France as well as that of Spanish dictator General Franco for an attack on Gibraltar, British south Atlantic shipping and British naval superiority in the Mediterranean. It was also thought that Hitler’s efforts to win Spain’s support would serve the purpose of keeping the United States out of the Second World War. Canada was considering establishing its own parachute corps. Diplomatic circles predicted an early conclusion of a Soviet-Japanese non-aggression pact. READ MORE
