For the first time, 10 years into his medical career, Winnipeg emergency department physician Dr. Kristjan Thompson thought about quitting. “For a split-second, I felt hopeless. I’m not hopeless. I’m motivated now more than ever to be part of the solution to solving this problem,” Thompson said of his Sunday shift at St. Boniface Hospital. Katie May has the story.

On the bright side
The Nature Conservancy of Canada has launched a $6.5-million campaign to protect The Yarrow, a 1,650-hectare property in southern Alberta with grasslands, wetlands, creeks and mixed forests. It is home to 27 wildlife species of provincial or national significance — including grizzly bears, birds called bobolinks and little brown bats.

On Oct. 26, 1953: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the province declined to offer financial aid for a study looking at forming the Greater Winnipeg metropolitan area. A strike by British petrol delivery workers created shortages that forced motorists in London to leave their vehicles at home; the strike was set to end the following day. In Winnipeg, a Blue Bombers-Roughriders game was likely to curtail voting in the civic election on Wednesday; the game start and the closing of polls were both set for 8 p.m. Search our archives for more here.
