On Oct. 27, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported Canadian troops in Gen. Montgomery’s 5th Army bore the brunt of fighting along the Allied front in the Vinchiaturo area of Italy. In eastern Europe, the Germans hurled waves of tanks into a roaring street battle in Krivoi Rog in a desperate attempt to hold open an escape gap for 500,000 fleeing troops threatened with annihilation in the Dnieper bulge. In Winnipeg, the Victory Loan ceremony featured the attestation of 18-year-old Dorothy Myrtle Shortreed into the Air Force, the 15,000th woman to join the service.
