On Oct. 28, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Soviet armies, blasting westward along a 150-mile front, threatened to encircle the disorganized but still powerful German forces near Dnepropetrovsk in southern Russia; the fall of Krivoi Rog to the Red Army was seen as imminent. Manitoba’s loan drive reached $40,448,700, past the halfway mark to the goal of $80 million, with the new amount recorded publicly on an indicator at Portage and Main. In Washington, D.C., Capt. Clark Gable’s attempted press conference on military matters was disrupted by “feminine interest in Clark Gable, the movie star” as fans descended on the Pentagon event.
