On Oct. 28, 1983: The Winnipeg Free Press reported a moderate group could hold more power following the civic election on Wednesday, according to some city councillors, but only five of 30 seats had changed hands. Canada was exploring with other Commonwealth nations the prospect of sending peacekeeping troops to Grenada to oversee the withdrawal of foreign nationals, supervise an election and enforce a truce; between 40 and 50 Canadians were stranded in the country. The RCMP was considering disciplinary action against the Ste. Rose detachment after Mounties failed to respond to calls for help from an Eriksdale man who was ambushed by four men on the highway.
