Sought to assist in escape: Leaked audio recordings show Canadian neo-Nazis tried to help military reservist Patrik Mathews flee the country after the Free Press exposed him as a member of a white supremacist paramilitary group. Third terror attack: Three people were killed by a knife-wielding attacker at a Roman Catholic church in Nice, France, less than a kilometre from where another attacker plowed a truck into a Bastille Day crowd in 2016, killing dozens. “He cried ‘Allah Akbar!’ over and over, even after he was injured,” said Mayor Christian Estrosi said today. It’s the third terror attack in France since a trial started last month for the 2015 killings at the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket. Last league: The Carolina Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football. The NFL is the only one of North America’s four major professional sports leagues currently playing. Plenty of killings amid pandemic: Winnipeg is on pace to break its record number of homicides set last year. There have been 39 killings in 2020, compared with 44 in 2019. ”It’s certainly possible that the pandemic is having some effects,” University of Manitoba criminologist Prof. Frank Cormier said. “People’s lives are chaotic, and chaos or disruption in people’s lives is a very strong correlate of many kinds of crime, particularly violent crime, including homicides.” Dean Pritchard reports. On Oct. 29, 1953: The Winnipeg Free Press reported on the results of the city elections, including votes for aldermen, school trustees and bylaws. Winnipeg ratepayers gave the go-ahead to two out of four bylaws, approving a city $3.5-million proposal for new schools and school expansion, as well as a $1.1-million Midtown bridge across the Assiniboine River. However, only 40 per cent of voters favoured a low-rental housing scheme. In Calgary, an East Kildonan RCAF veteran had been shot and killed in what police termed a case of murder and suicide.
