Free Press Head Start for Oct. 3

Good morning!

I looks like the first few days of October are off to a warm start, but overnight lows are expected to dip below freezing mid-week. If you’ve already gotten pumpkins to decorate ahead of Thanksgiving or to carve for Halloween, don’t forget to protect them against frost.

The family of Cyril Joseph (CJ) Mowat, 33, who died in hospital after being found in medical distress outside a fast-food restaurant in August, are awaiting the results of the provincial medical examiner’s toxicology report. They believe Mowat, who had been living transiently for about a year, experienced complications related to an opiate overdose. Erik Pindera reports.

On the bright side

The huge impact of the late Wayne Catcheway Jr.’s work at Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre was celebrated in the opening on Sept. 23 of a new space named in his honour, Wayne’s World Youth Lounge. Of remembrances shared by many who gathered for the event, Michael Redhead Champagne says, “The stories were constant about Wayne going above and beyond to help a child in need, a family with support, and ensuring that everyone around him had a full belly.” Janine LeGal has the story.

On this date

On Oct. 3, 1930: The Manitoba Free Press reported the provincial government, after consulting with the municipalities involved, would begin as soon as possible its extensive construction program, with funding from the federal government, meant to ease unemployment through new jobs. Premier John Bracken expressed hope that beyond federal job initiatives, prime minister R.B. Bennett would quickly conclude a trade agreement with Britain that would secure an ongoing export market for Prairie wheat. Tyndall stone would be used for the construction of a new university arts building, with work to begin immediately on the agricultural college campus at Fort Garry.
