As they demand justice, relatives of a 41-year-old woman who died weeks after being set on fire in Winnipeg are urging people with information to come forward and help solve the homicide. Before she died Aug. 20, Melissa Cook told a former partner her legs had been doused with an accelerant and set ablaze when she was attacked over a $1,500 drug debt in late June. Chris Kitching has the story.
On the bright side
Satirical website The Onion has taken the unusual step in defending free speech in filing an amicus brief with the Supreme Court of the United States, in support of a man who was arrested and prosecuted for making fun of police on social media. While The Onion‘s brief included passages of exaggeration for the sake up humour (claiming it had a readership of 4.3 trillion) and calling the federal judiciary “total Latin dorks,” its defence of Anthony Novak’s freedom of speech was serious. The Associated Press reports.

On Oct. 5, 1950: The Winnipeg Free Press reported 18 families fled their homes when a fire broke out in the Gunn Block, at the corner of Jarvis Avenue and Derby Street; the source of the blaze was one of the businesses in the building. A 175,000-strong UN army was massed at the 38th parallel, ready to “wipe out all Communist resistance” in Korea.
