COVID-19 clampdown: Tonight is the final night bars and restaurants can serve liquor until 2 a.m. Starting Wednesday night, licensed premises in the Winnipeg area can’t sell liquor later than 10 p.m., and customers must be gone by 11 p.m. Dr. Brent Roussin, the province’s chief public health officer, said transmission of the coronavirus at bars tends to happen later in the evening, presumably after patrons have drunk more liquor. Turkey criticizes Canadian move: Turkey is accusing Canada of “double standards” for suspending arms exports to the NATO ally. Ottawa is investigating the use of Canadian drone technology in the conflict between Azerbaijan — which is backed by Turkey — and Armenia. A Turkish Foreign Ministry statement notes a United Nations report said Canada was helping to fuel a war in Yemen and accused the ally of being influenced by Armenian diaspora groups. Physicists win prestigious prize: Three scientists were named as the winners of the Nobel Prize in physics. Briton Roger Penrose won “for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity,” while German Reinhard Genzel and American Andrea Ghez won “for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy.” The Associated Press reports. Kyrgyzstan cancels election results: The results of Kyrgyzstan’s recent parliamentary election were declared invalid by a commission after mass protests in the capital led to one death and hundreds of injuries. Members of several opposition parties announced plans to oust the president and form a new government, The Associated Press reports. READ MORE
