Abortion ban in Texas: A state law banning abortion after six weeks took effect at midnight, and the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to act on an emergency appeal to put the law on hold. The law is the most dramatic restriction on abortion rights in the U.S. since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

On Sept. 1, 1987: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that city officials said the exotic pets bylaw needed to be reviewed after an apparent violation involving a Winnipeg man who had a 10-foot Burmese python in his apartment resulted in a magistrate dismissing the case. A private care home was granted a conditional repreive to continue operating as government officials investigated complaints regarding the well-being and safety of residents.
