Tories take it: Premier Brian Pallister’s decision to call an early election yielded a second consecutive majority government, but with fewer seats. “We captured, over the last two elections, more seats than any back-to-back government in the history of the Province of Manitoba. Crash closes intersection: Logan Avenue is closed to eastbound and westbound traffic at McPhillips Street after a serious motor vehicle crash. McPhillips remains open. Police say the road closure might be in effect all morning.
Another election: A federal election will be called this morning when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asks Gov. Gen. Julie Payette to dissolve Parliament. Several of the seven Liberal seats in Winnipeg are considered vulnerable, Dylan Robertson reports. READ MORE
Britain’s prorogued Parliament: A court in the U.K. has ruled Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament was unlawful, and a hearing before the Supreme Court is set for next week. On Sept. 11, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that 1,200 local meat packers were set to take a strike vote, with 700 more to vote on a strike the next day; in Vancouver, meat rationing was already underway as nearly 2,000 workers in meat packing, furniture and steel industries picketed. Winnipeg police found on the city outskirts a stolen car used by bandits in a daylight robbery in which $25,409 was stolen from a hotel proprietor on Carlton Street. READ MORE
