On Sept. 12, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the beating death of a St. Boniface youth, 19-year-old Leo Lamontagne, triggered a round-the-clock manhunt to find the person responsible; Free Press staff artist Peter Kuch aided police in preparing a drawing of the suspect. Manitoba’s attorney general, a liquor commission spokesman and an enforcement officer denied a charge by a leading United Church clergyman that illicit liquor was being mixed in drinks in Winnipeg’s cocktail bars.
