On Sept. 16, 1977: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Jean Chrétien was sworn in as Canada’s first French-Canadian minister of finance. In Manitoba, gas rate increases for rural customers of Inter-City Gas were approved, affecting around 14,000 customers. Manitoba’s political party leaders made public appearances on the campaign trail leading up to the 1977 election. The president of the National Indian Brotherhood predicted that Canada would recognize the first quasi-sovereign Indian nations within five to 10 years. Sony was gearing up for a marketing battle to make its new video recording machine, the Betamax, the dominant format for recording shows of television, over Panasonic’s rival machine, also set to launch in the fall.
