Ken Lee, whose campaign platform includes promises of “no vaccine passports” and “vaccination not a job requirement,” said last night he has met the requirements for the race to become Progressive Conservative leader and Manitoba’s next premier. Sources said Lee has sold many more party memberships than any of the other declared candidates. McPhillips MLA Shannon Martin, who launched his campaign Monday, announced late last night that his bid has “come up short.” It’s not clear when the PC party will announce who qualified to be on the ballot.

Premier Kelvin Goertzen will speak with journalists at a media availability at the Manitoba legislature later this morning.

A Winnipeg Jets minicamp begins this morning at the MTS Iceplex and continues until Monday.

Four people were detained today for allegedly planning to attack a synagogue in Germany. Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism, began at sunset on Wednesday. A deadly attack happened on Yom Kippur in another German city two years ago.

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd, is scheduled to be arraigned today for allegedly violating a teen’s civil rights in a case involving a restraint similar to the one used on Floyd.

On Sept. 16, 1988: The Winnipeg Free Press reported prime minister Brian Mulroney was expected to announce a $1.3-billion national drought relief program for farmers within two weeks. He was also expected to call an election by Oct. 1. An inquiry heard an officer taunted a man who had fled police into the Assiniboine River, saying no one would save him; the man drowned. A woman filed a statement of claim saying a golf ball flew through an open window and struck her in the head while she was driving past the Charleswood Golf Club.
