Funeral for Oshawa victims: A private funeral will begin this morning for the four family members fatally shot in an Oshawa home earlier this month. Police have identified the killer as Mitchell Lapa, a Winnipeg resident and the brother of the lone surviving victim. Investigators have said Lapa fatally shot himself after the attack. The Canadian Press reports.

On Sept. 17, 1940: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that gales had scattered a German invasion fleet heading across the English Channel for Great Britain; winds reached 35 to 40 miles per hour and drove big waves through the Straits of Dover. Meanwhile, some of London’s most exclusive streets were hit by German bombs. British prime minister Winston Churchill told people to maintain constant vigilance against German invasion, but that despite that country’s air raids, Britain’s air strength was increasing.
