Berth in Cup final clinched: The Tampa Bay Lightning will face the Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup final after an overtime win against the New York Islanders in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final Thursday night. On Sept. 18, 1950: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that U.S. forces, part of a United Nations spearhead, had closed to within three miles of Seoul, the Communist-held capital of South Korea. Canadian Navy officer Capt. Jeffrey Brock of Winnipeg was commander of a UN naval task group in the west Korean invasion force. The U.S. drafted a three-point plan for a UN world police force to resist aggression anywhere around the globe. In Great Britain, the Tories planned to challenge the Labour government in the House of Commons on two issues: the sale of strategic materials and machine tools to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and on Labour’s plan to nationalize most of the nation’s iron and steel industry.
