Good morning.

The first day of fall — which officially begins at 2:20 p.m. — will be a lovely one, with a forecast high of 25 C.

The wait to see who won the Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia—Headingley riding in Monday’s federal election continues, as special ballots are verified and counted. None of the special ballots had been marked as counted on Elections Canada’s website as of this morning.

Westbound Goulet Street from Goulet Place to St. Mary’s Road will close intermittently for periods of up to an hour from 6 p.m. this evening until the night of Sept. 30.

Incoming from India: The first direct flight from India to Canada since April arrived in Toronto early this morning as a sort of test, even though such flights are prohibited until late Sunday night. It was the first of three such flights landing in Toronto and Vancouver today, and all passengers were tested for COVID-19 upon arrival. A ban on direct commercial and private passenger flights from India took effect April 22 amid an outbreak of a COVID-19 variant in that county.

COVID-19 cases down: The number of new COVID-19 cases around the world decreased to 3.6 million from 4 million the previous week, the World Health Organization said. New cases have dropped for consecutive weeks. Last week’s decrease was the first substantial decline in more than two months, The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

On Sept. 22, 1939: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the new Rumanian government exacted a heavy punishment on the pro-Nazi Iron Guard, conducting mass executions in retaliation for the assassination of premier Armand Calinescu. The British and French high commands kept a close eye on German troop entrenchments on the Netherlands frontier. Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to a demarcation line between their armies in Poland.
