Set for throne speech: Gov. Gen. Julie Payette will deliver the Liberal government’s speech from the throne in Parliament. The speech is expected to last as long as an hour and will outline how the government will deal with the surge in COVID-19 cases and the continuing economic crisis the pandemic has caused. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will later make a nationally televised address to emphasize the threat a coming wave of the coronavirus poses. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

Court hearings continue: Indigenous leaders, special interest groups and other provinces will have their say as the Supreme Court of Canada continues to hear arguments about whether the federal carbon tax is constitutional. On Tuesday, Alberta and Saskatchewan argued the law intrudes on provincial jurisdiction, while the federal government and British Columbia defended the tax. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

Cup final continues: The Dallas Stars and the Tampa Bay Lightning will face off in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final tonight. When the final has been tied 1-1, the winner of Game 3 has gone on to win the Cup 75 per cent of the time since 1939. Mike McIntyre reports from Edmonton. READ MORE

Ginsburg’s casket in court: The casket of late justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be on display at the U.S. Supreme Court for two days starting later this morning. Thousands of people are expected to view the casket after a private ceremony inside the court. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Tree-planting tour: Mayor Brian Bowman will embark on a tree-planting tour throughout the city in support of the Million Tree Challenge. Today is National Tree Day.

On Sept. 23, 1980: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Iraqi ground forces had invaded Iran, and Iranian jet fighters strafed and bombed Iraq’s capital Baghdad and nine other targets; a Tehran radio broadcast said the Iranian parliament had decided to freeze the question of releasing U.S. hostages held since the previous Nov. 4. In Winnipeg, the construction of a 45-unit apartment development was poised to go ahead despite part of it being in a potential methane gas zone. The attorney general’s office decided to proceed with criminal charges against two Winnipeg police officers suspected of stealing firearms from the police department.
