The Kavanaugh hearings: A prime topic of conversation around water coolers today will be Thursday’s televised testimony by Christine Blasey Ford, who said she was sexually assaulted by U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who denies it. Public plaza opens: An official opening was held Thursday for the True North Square public plaza, which is tucked between the first two towers of a highly-anticipated four-building complex in downtown Winnipeg. “Manitoba is alive and well and can support these kinds of projects,” said True North spokesman Jim Ludlow. Bailing out the Bombers: Premier Brian Palliser says talks are underway for a new stadium-funding deal with the Blue Bombers that will be more transparent. Violent to 100 women: Crown prosecutors are in court today to apply to have a Winnipeg man classified as a dangerous offender and locked up indefinitely. They believe Douglas Bowman has been violent to more than 100 women over the past two decades. Katie May will report from court.

Great trail: The Great Trail Donor Pavilion will be officially unveiled today at The Forks National Historic Site by Minister of International Trade Diversification Jim Carr, Premier Brian Pallister, Mayor Brian Bowman, Hartley Richardson and Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg president Damon Johnston. The Great Trail, formerly known as the Trans Canada Trail, is the world’s longest network of recreational multi-use trails.

On Sept. 28, 1942: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Russians were speeding Red Army reinforcements to support Stalingrad against plane-borne German forces attempting to slice across the city to the Volga banks. Canadian representatives of General Charles de Gaulle denied the leader of the Fighting French forces had arrived in Canada. Manitoba set a $53-million goal for its Victory Loan drive. READ MORE
