On Sept. 3, 1966: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that four escapees from Headingley Jail, led by “flying bandit” Kenneth Leishman, stole a light plane from an airstrip near Steinbach; the aircraft was reportedly seen heading south over the U.S. border. The theft of the plane followed the escapees’ abduction of a couple in their car near Stonewall. One of 10 escapees from Headingley Jail voluntarily surrendered himself to police, witnessed by a Free Press photographer and a CBC newsman. READ MORE
