On Sept. 3, 1959: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Detroit, Mich., the second of the Big Three auto companies’ economy cars went into production, as Ford started building Falcons in Lorain, Ohio; Chevrolet had been building Corvairs at its nearby plant in Willow Run since mid-July. Winnipeg ratepayers could be asked to vote $1,165,000 for five new city pools in the upcoming civic election. In Edmonton, Alta., a Nobel-prize-winning chemist said 290,000 people would die owing to effects of fallout from nuclear weapons exploded over the previous 14 years.
