Round dance returns: Portage and Main will be blocked off when a round dance organized by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs starts at 1 p.m. It will be the second such event at the site in less than a month. On Sept. 30, 1978: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that stunned Roman Catholics around the world mourned the sudden death of Pope John Paul I. The Canadian Transport Commission approved the construction of Winnipeg’s long-awaited Sherbrook-McGregor overpass. A dispute between the Manitoba telephone system and Winnipeg cable companies scuttled cable service to Brandon and Portage la Prairie less than an hour after it began.
