On Sept. 30, 1931: The Manitoba Free Press reported that two people were killed in a violent clash between miners and police in Estevan, Sask. Saskatchewan government officials took swift action to quell a resumption of the miners’ riots there; 40 fully armed mounted policeman were sent by rail to reinforce the RCMP officers there who had borne the brunt of fighting with striking miners. Automotive history was made when Manitoba’s minister of public works and a party made the first trip by automobile, in two cars, from Winnipeg to Kenora, Ont. on the new Manitoba-Ontario highway.
