Hong Kong clashes: Hong Kong’s government has announced it will withdraw an extradition bill that has sparked months of protests. On Sept. 4, 1976: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that gas prices in Manitoba were on the rise, with motorists in Winnipeg paying from 79.9 to 89.9 cents a gallon but with prices ranging higher farther from the city, such as $1.08 a gallon in Leaf Rapids. Premier Ed Schreyer said he would personally make inquiries regarding accusations of nepotism and conflict of interest within the province’s tourism department. Delayed photos from the second Viking probe sent to Mars reached Earth showing the craft safely on the Martian surface. Actors including Burt Reynolds and Robert Redford were touted as possibilities to play the lead in the upcoming Superman movie, which had already signed big-name actors Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman.
