A longtime ally of former U.S. president Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, is expected to turn himself in today in a state criminal case in New York City. According to the Washington Post, the charges are similar to federal charges Bannon faced when he was accused of duping donors who gave money to fund a wall on the U.S. southern border, for which he was pardoned by Trump. The Associated Press reports.
Superbowl contenders meet as the NFL season begins with defending champions the L.A. Rams hosting the Buffalo Bills, beginning at 7:20 p.m. CDT. The Associated Press reports.

A Winnipeg couple has gotten nothing but static on their landline for more than 1,700 hours, despite Bell MTS crews coming to address the problem. “It is so frustrating. We’ve missed some very important phone calls. We’ve missed doctor calls and my husband, who is a drywaller doing odd jobs, has missed a couple of jobs,” says Debbie Roy. Kevin Rollason reports.

On Sept. 8, 1966: The Winnipeg Free Press reported three of four escapees from Headingley jail who stole a plane from Steinbach were photographed when they landed the same day at Tyler, Minn., in an attempt to refuel, posing as cattle buyers.
